My story began as a young pup. I loved Enid Blyton, and my favourite book was The Magic Faraway Tree. A tree in the woods that connected you to incredible adventures with all sorts of characters. My belief then was that all of life should be like this. That has never changed.
As I got into my teen years I was encouraged to read more young adult fiction. Though my magical leanings refused to leave. I decorated my room with psychedelic colours, a large poster of The Magic Roundabout, a soft toy creature from Fraggle Rock, images of Bjork surrounded by her own version of reality. And fairies, lots of fairies.
I later discovered Glastonbury, Somerset. On my first visit, my first shop, I was instantly dusted with fairy dust by a woman wearing glorious wings. Surrounded by book shops exploring spirituality, aliens, mythology, and shops selling fairy type clothing. It was incredibly magical and I continue to try to visit as often as possible.
Living not too far from Glastonbury meant I was able to attend the Glastonbury festival without too much fuss. On my first visit I met a lady who made these incredible wings. They were the stuff of dreams. She still creates these amazing wings and you can find them here.
I spent the rest of my adulthood until now, trying to deny my inner fairy. I tried to force myself to be “normal”, playing the corporate game, not being fully open in relationships or with friends. In 2022 after a devastating series of events, I commissioned my own set of wings from the above creator. I wanted to gift myself something special. They are incredible, and all mine.
When I reached another particularly low point in 2023, I gave myself permission to explore beyond the door that the wings had opened. My partner was not just accepting of who I really am, he also had his own magical self to embrace too. We called ourselves Fairy and Wizard, because that’s exactly what we feel like we are.
Now we are here, stepping out more fully as ourselves, more vocal about our beliefs, values and passions. Personally, I want to help towards a world where all of this is okay. We don’t have to dampen down our magical selves to bend to social norms. We can still be fully capable adults and swan around wearing wings and bestowing magical incantations for fun. We can be all of it. I’m going to help lead the way. Among all the wonderful people who have begun this journey before me. Would you like to join us?
